What Does $450 Worth of Groceries Look Like?

Like this.

Not too impressive, eh?  Well, to be honest, that's not all food.

We're still in Isle of Hope Marina here in Savannah, Georgia.  One of my jobs is to put the Boston Whaler on the roof back together so we can anchor out and be able to get the dogs ashore.  Being anchored out, we won't have easy access to things like groceries, so we borrowed the marina's loaner car and hied ourselves to the Super Walmarts to stock up.  Have you ever been to a Super Walmarts?   No, me neither until yesterday.  It's impressive, to say the least.

Not being familiar with the layout, we walked up and down every aisle, picking up everything on our list, and also grabbing things impulsively.

"Creamed corn!  I love creamed corn!"

A Super Walmarts is a Walmart with a grocery store attached, and we needed an airtight container for dog food, so off we went with our over flowing grocery cart right into the regular Walmarts.   We passed the movie aisle and I dilly-dallied.   Pam said "Do you want to look at movies while I get the container?".   Well, that's a dumb question to ask a guy, so off Pam went while I looked at movies.

Just a point of clarification here, Pam and I don't watch a lot of movies, but sometimes when the weather is nasty and there's no indoor boat projects to do (point of honesty- there are always indoor boat projects to do, I just don't always feel like doing them), watching movies or old TV shows is a lot of fun.  We have Hulu and Netflix accounts, so if we have free marina internet access, we're good to go.  Our Verizon 3G hotspot account also gives us internet access when we're not at a marina, but that's limited to 10 GBs a month, and watching movies sucks that up real quick, so we don't watch too much streaming video with it.

By the time Pam came back with the container, I was already deep into the bargain movie bin.  Soon, we were both up to our elbows, digging throught the $5 DVDs.   We finally came up with these....

OK, I can see that you're questioning our selections here.  When I watch movies and TV, I want to be entertained.   I'm not into anything with deep social redeeming value.  And just look at the $5 bargains here!  "Cowboy Legends",  a DVD set of 28 movies!  "Heroes of the Old West" with 20 full TV episodes and 10 feature films!  "Gun Justice" featuring the Lone Ranger!

What?  You think I should have "Sophie's Choice" in there?  Not a chance.

OK, so $35 of our $450 worth of groceries was crappy movies.  And $150 was a stop at the package store for a month's supply of  a few fine boxes of wine, several bottles of scotch and vodka in plastic bottles, and a couple of 12 packs of victory beers.  But still, that pic up top of those two carts isn't all that impressive, I don't think.  When I was a kid and I accompanied my mom to the grocery store, her $20 worth of a week's groceries was bigger than that, and she had plenty of creamed corn.

    1. LOL! I saw the creamed corn as I walked down an aisle and thought back to when I was a kid and my mom served it up regularly. I had to grab a can of it to see if it's as I remembered. I'll let you know.

  4. Glad you have had your intro to Super Wallyworld, as a boater it is sadly, as important as the West Marine to cruisers. On the loop it was sometimes rare to see a real grocery store. I am not quite sure why, but food especially meat, is much more expensive in Florida than in Massachusetts. And coffee is off the charts, but coffee is as important to me as victory beer is to you.
Creamed corn I see a shepards pie in your future maybe.
    Happy Trails!
