Boat Renaming Ceremony

If you're a long time follower of this blog, you might recall that Pam and I scoffed at having a ceremony to appease Neptune when we applied the name Drift Away to our boat's transom.  We encountered problem after problem when we began our voyage until Pam decided enough was enough and, surrounded by Filter Bosses and fuel lines, demanded that we have our ceremony.   According to legend, each and every vessel is recorded by name in the Ledger of the Deep and is known personally to Poseidon, or Neptune, the god of the sea.  We performed our ceremony at Atlantic Highlands, New Jersey and we have had no problems since. There must be something to mariner superstitions, I guess.

Being much smarter than we are, yesterday Dick and Deb applied the name to their new-to-them Whitby 42 ketch, and within hours did their ceremony.  The first step in this time honored tradition is making sure that everyone has a plastic cup of champagne.

Next, Dick read an homage to sailors past and to Neptune.

There are any number of appropriate naming ceremonies that can be found on the internet.  I don't think anyone has ever researched which ones are more effective than others.

After several toasts, it was time to give Neptune his share.

The final step in the ceremony is to uncover the new name.

And then it was time to party!

And a good time was had by all.

As I'm writing this on Easter morning, Pam and I would like to wish you all a beautiful Easter.  Enjoy the fun of the day...

the reason we have it, and the wonder of it.

  1. Ummmm Dave, It's afternoon and I haven't had my Driftaway fix today. Is your computer broke? Did you fall off the boat after one too many victory beers? Are you off chasing Ruby and Chevy? Did Gerty go swimming again? Did the whaler come back and you're on the maiden voyage? Did Pam cook such an amazing Easter dinner you haven't woken up yet? WHAT IS IT DAVE??? My alarm didn't go off this morning, my coffee was bitter, traffic was terrible, my office walls are closing in on me, and I'm CRANKY!!!
